De-winterizing your RV: use these tips to get ready for spring and summer fun and travel.
If you’re like most avid RVers, you look forward to warmer weather because it means more opportunities for RV travel adventures.
However, it’s best not to jump into this renewed activity without taking some basic precautions with your RV. De-winterizing your RV makes RV travel safer and more enjoyable.
Tips for de-winterizing your RV:
- Start by walking around your RV. Inspect the exterior to see if anything seems missing or needs repair. Check your storage compartments, too.
- Then, look at the engine. Check the fluid levels and fill them to the correct levels. Look for any plugs or wires that appear damaged or worn. Remove any cobwebs or debris that may have accumulated in your engine during winter. Make sure all your lights (headlights, brake lights, turn signals, interior lights) work properly.
- Take your RV for a short test drive and monitor it for any indications of handling, exhaust or engine trouble.
- Check your tire pressure. Chances are your tires lost quite a bit of pressure during the winter months.
- Examine any hitch components for signs of damage or wear. Remove excess grease on your components and re-lubricate them.
- Did you place any covers on your RV before winter? If so, remember to remove them.
- Inspect your refrigerator and water heater to see if they’re operating properly or need some maintenance work.
- Don’t forget about your RV’s interior. Be especially on the lookout for any signs of leaks (such as discoloration on the ceiling, floor or walls, or a bad smell).
- Flush your entire plumbing system. And then sterilize your plumbing and fresh water tank with a mixture of water and bleach (or a product designed for this task).
