5 Tips for Insuring your Horse Trailer with Living Quarters

  1. Usage: Make sure you clarify with your agent how the trailer will be used. Will you be transporting your own animals, or do you occasionally transport horses “for hire?” By being clear about your usage, your agent can make sure you are getting the best possible rates for your horse trailer, and may be able to find you additional discounts.
  2. Liability: Many auto insurance companies will insure a horse trailer with living quarters the same way they would insure a utility trailer- with no liability coverage unless it is hitched to an insured auto. Since your horse trailer also serves as your temporary living quarters, make sure you ask your agent about specialty coverage that would protect you if someone is hurt in your RV or at your campsite.
  3. Contents: Review your policy to make sure you have adequate coverage for the belongings and tack you’ll be travelling with. Specialized personal effects coverage is available to cover your expensive equipment and belongings when you hit the road.
  4. Roadside Assistance: Some towing/roadside assistance providers may not be equipped to handle horse trailers, and even the providers that are can be extremely costly. You may be eligible for a towing package through your insurance policy that specializes in towing RVs and trailers, and getting them back up and running when a disablement occurs.  You may even qualify for a discounted rate by combining your roadside assistance package with your insurance policy.
  5. Total Loss Replacement: Many horse trailers with living facilities may qualify for full replacement in the event there’s a total loss. Considering that a brand new trailer can run upwards of $100,000, this valuable coverage will make sure your investment is protected at claim time. Ask your agent to see if you qualify.
